Quick and Easy Home Safety & Security Tips

June is National Homeownership month! This is a time to celebrate that owning a home brings value to families, communities, and neighborhoods across the United States. It is also a time to recognize the organizations within our community that help individuals and families achieve their homeownership goals.

Owning a home also comes with the responsibility of keeping you, your belongings and the people in your home safe. Here are 11 quick and easy home safety & security tips to consider implementing into your home:

1. Change Your Locks
When you move into a new home, be sure to change all locks.

2. Keep Doors Locked
This might seem obvious, but keep all doors locked whether you are home or not.

3. Install Motion Lighting
Install motion lighting close to the perimeter of your property to fend off any potential intruders.

4. Maintain Landscaping
Whenever you’re gone, make sure to have your lawn mowed.

5. Smart Home System
It’s a good idea to invest in a smart home system to help monitor your home while you are away.

6. Collect Mail
When you are on vacation, have a neighbor collect your mail, so it doesn’t look like the house is unoccupied.

7. Reinforce Windows
First floor windows and doors are the most common entry points. Reinforce the glass at these locations.

8. Valuables Inventory
Take an inventory of your valuables that are in your home. Even better... take photos of these items.

9. Secure Filing Cabinet
Any information about bank accounts or social security numbers should be locked in a filing cabinet.

10. Share Photos Later
Try to delay posting photos while on vacation. This is an alert that your home is vacant.

11. Frost Garage Windows
This will prevent people from knowing when your car is gone and what you may be storing in your garage.
